How Do You Spot a Defective Pressure Cooker and Why Does It Matter?

Did you know that the first-ever pressure cooker was manufactured in 1679? It was popularly known as the Digester and used the heat of steam to cook food. This principle has vastly remained the same in modern-day pressure cookers.
Even the purpose of pressure-cooking food is the same – to cut down cooking time. This means humanity has been familiar with pressure cookers for centuries now. Today, two main types of this kitchen equipment are available – stovetop pressure cookers and electric multi-cookers.
Almost every US household has one or both versions of this appliance for comfortable cooking and delicious meals. As per Fortune Business Insights, the pressure cooker market size is growing at a CAGR of 9.90%.
When sold and kept in good condition, a pressure cooker can easily last for years. However, you cannot afford to overlook any defects, at the time of purchase or otherwise. In this article, we will understand the cost of neglecting defective pressure cookers and how to spot the defects.
The Primary Reason for Pressure Cooker Injuries
Have you ever heard of someone being injured by their pressure cooker? A recent case occurred in South Webster, Ohio as a 43-year-old woman was cooking potato soup for her daughter. The woman, Becky Fargo, was taken aback (quite literally) when the lid of the cooker broke and the appliance exploded.
She recalls being thrown back a good four feet due to the explosion. Even then, the boiling soup coated her chest, arms, and face as she suffered from second and third-degree burns. According to TorHoerman Law, such cases have become common with pressure cooker brands like Tristar, Crock-Pot, and Instant Pot.
Mostly, the cooker’s design or poor manufacturing is the reason. This is why injured people are suing the said manufacturers. It has been reported that victims have suffered from major burns, cuts, eye injuries, amputations, and infection as a result of the Tristar cooker or Instant Pot explosion. The settlements may vary between $25,000 and $2,00,000 depending on the severity of injuries.
What Constitutes a Defective Pressure Cooker
A pressure cooker can become a safety hazard if not checked often and maintained properly. So, how can you spot any defects early on to avoid a disaster in the kitchen? The following are the most common defects associated with pressure cookers that increase the risk of explosion.
Gasket Failure
The pressure cooker’s gasket is responsible for creating a vacuum seal that pressurizes the pot. In case of gasket failure, there is the risk of the pot’s lid opening prematurely, leading to an explosion.
This would naturally release scalding liquids and steam, causing contact burns. The following are the signs of gasket failure –
- A buildup of pressure and steam being released unexpectedly
- The cooker may have hot spots due to uneven heat distribution
- There may be steam leakage from the cooker
Issues with the Lid Lock
Every pressure cooker comes with a locking mechanism that ensures the lid of the cooker stays firmly in place. If there is any issue with the lid’s lock, it could spell disaster as the lid may blow open mid-cooking.
A thorough examination of the cooker’s lock button area should reveal any issues. For instance – if there is a misalignment or visible damage like cracks, the locking mechanism may fail. Moreover, check for any foreign objects obstructing the lock’s movement.
Defective Ventilation System
The cooker’s ventilation system is also important in the sense that it helps manage the air temperature and removes pollutants, grease, and smoke from above the cooktop. Even as your pressure cooker is filled with hot steam, the kitchen remains cool because of the ventilation system.
If this system is non-functional or defective, pressure will build up rapidly causing the cooker to overheat. Once that happens, it’s only a matter of time before the appliance explodes. Look for these signs of a defective ventilation system –
- Unusual noises from the exhaust system
- Bad or strange odors from the appliance
- Formation of mold
Loose Seals
Besides the gasket, safety plugs are provided with a pressure cooker to seal the steam. These are extremely important as they prevent the high pressure inside from transferring outside. If any seal is loose, the pressure cooker’s lid will pop open to an explosion.
The below-mentioned signs point towards loose seals –
- Leakage of steam
- Cracks on the cooker’s lid or edges
- Too much pressure build-up
- Faulty lid hinges
If you notice any of these signs of defect, address them at the earliest. If they’re present at the time of purchase, inform the retailer and have the appliance removed. If after purchase, look for replacements in case of new rubber sealings or get a new appliance. This is any day better than risking the possibility of a life-threatening explosion.

Perfect for a family dinner or a backyard meal, this dish is simple to make and full of flavor. Let’s talk about what makes these skewers so special and why you’ll want to make them again and again.
What Makes Chicken Satay So Good?
The magic of chicken satay lies in the way it’s cooked and seasoned. The chicken is cut into strips and placed on sticks, which makes it fun to eat. It’s then cooked until golden and juicy, usually on a grill or in the oven. But what makes it even better is the sauce. Many people serve chicken satay with a peanut-based dipping sauce, and it adds a creamy, rich taste that balances the spices in the chicken.
These spicy and savory skewers are also easy to customize. You can make them a little spicy, or very mild. You can even try different sauces to match your taste. Kids love them because they’re easy to hold and fun to dip. Grown-ups love them because the flavors are bold and exciting.
A Great Dinner Option
Chicken satay skewers are perfect for dinner because they don’t take much time to make. You can prepare them ahead of time, store them in the fridge, and cook them when you’re ready to eat. Perfect for Parties, Too
Planning a party or a weekend get-together? Chicken satay skewers are a crowd-pleaser. They look great on a plate and taste even better. You can serve them as appetizers, snacks, or as part of a full meal. Just put the skewers on a tray, add a bowl of dipping sauce, and you’re ready to impress your guests.
Plus, they don’t need to be served hot. Even at room temperature, they stay tasty and juicy. That means you don’t have to worry about keeping them warm while guests arrive.
